CITY HALL

Labor unions got a big win Wednesday at City Hall when the council put one of its own on the board at the city's influential redevelopment agency.

John Mohlis, president of Columbia Pacific Building & Construction Trades Council, will help the five-person board decide how to spend more than $200 million annually to keep Portland pretty. Mohlis starts his three-year term with a Jan. 24 meeting. Mayor Tom Potter has now picked all five board members at the commission he supervises.

Mohlis was among the union leaders who criticized the Portland Development Commission last year for its reluctance to pay higher construction wages on real estate projects it subsidized. Mohlis says he wants to continue working on wage issues, but says he won't be a labor-only commissioner.

No surprise about Brett Favre

MILWAUKEE - It's 2017. For the 12th consecutive year the phone rings about this time of the winter. It's the sports editor.

Favre's coming back.

Like that's news?

This time, yeah. He wants to break George Blanda's record of 26 seasons played.

Well, yes, and here we go again.

Talk about good timing for The Announcement. How fitting that Friday was Groundhog Day, at least in context of the Bill Murray flick. Hattiesburg Brett popped up and didn't see his shadow, which portends good things for the Green Bay Packers.

Yes, Brett Favre is returning, but no one cuts into "Days of Our Lives" for the breaking story when the swallows come back to San Juan Capistrano. Still, it happens every year, just as No. 4 decides he needs to get out of the house and do that which comes so to naturally to him, the job that guarantees him both the adulation and the compensation of millions.
