7 Surprising 5-Star Stocks

Seventy-seven companies are reporting earnings today, and the rest of the week will be even more aggressive. That's right, we're knee-deep in earnings season. What this means is that phrases such as "less than expected," "missing analyst estimates," and "lowered 2007 guidance" are giving many investors restless sleep and indigestion. What's a long-term investor to do?

In his book The Intelligent Investor, Ben Graham introduces readers to a charming but manic-depressive fellow who goes by the name Mr. Market. Mr. Market's game is to pay you house calls on a daily basis to persuade you to buy or sell the stocks of businesses he owns or wants to own. Because of Mr. Market's bipolar affliction, he will sometimes show up at your door fantastically excited about the prospects for the future, will want a sky-high price for his stocks, and will similarly offer you premium prices for yours.

BB&T shows 42% drop in income

BB&T Corp. took four after-tax charges in the fourth quarter, which contributed to a 42 percent decline in net income to $251 million, the bank reported yesterday.

Diluted earnings were 46 cents a share, compared with 78 cents in the fourth quarter of 2005.

The largest of the four charges was the $139 million that BB&T added to its tax reserves related to what it called "leveraged lease transactions."

Excluding the after-tax charges, BB&T had profit of $449 million, up 5 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2005. Diluted earnings were 82 cents, which beat by 3 cents the average forecast of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research.

The decline in net income after the charges did not deter investors, particularly since BB&T announced the need for most of the charges during the quarter.

Super Bowl provides lots of quantity, fine quality, and no 'malfunctions'

(AP) - Phew! CBS got through the half-time show without a "wardrobe malfunction."

The Artist Formerly Known as a Munchkin of Wardrobe Dysfunction began by singing "Let's Go Crazy," but he didn't.

Prince, who became a Jehovah's Witness in the mid-1990s, no longer wears yellow, butt-baring pants as he did at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards (prompting Howard Stern's sendup at the '92 VMAs). The closest thing to a fashion statement Sunday night was an odd kerchief on his head. So the NFL had no repeat of the 2004 Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake show, which happened the last time CBS broadcast the game.

Prince, 48, who rose to stardom in the '80s with his distinctive fusion of R&B, funk, soul and rock, once looked androgynous and produced songs that (lest we forget) drove Tipper Gore nuts (and made her a target for anti-censorship types like Frank Zappa).
