| Low-Carb Diet Cures Severe Case Of GERD
Nothing proves the health benefits of livin' la vida low-carb better than real people sharing their own experiences following this amazing lifestyle change. That's exactly what I found in this Spokesman-Review Q&A health column featuring syndicated health columnists Joe and Teresa Graedon.Interestingly, I've featured the Graedon's before at my blog when another one of their readers told them how the low-carb lifestyle not only helped control his weight and blood sugar, but completely eliminated his heartburn. This latest letter featured someone who used to suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. He said the condition was so bad that it forced him to take Prilosec every single day."Even so, I had severe heartburn, and often food got lodged in my esophagus, even after it was surgically stretched," he wrote.
Acupuncture treatment has its devotees
Terri Malone doesn't even flinch as acupuncturist Kristen Happe inserts fine needles into the patient's shins. Melone visits Happe at The Grape Seed in Bridgeville for acupuncture treatments two times a week and claims she's addicted to the electrical feeling. "It works, believe me, it's wonderful," Melone says. She's even recruited the entire family -- including daughter Alexa, who joins her this day -- to the Shady Avenue business. Last week's session was targeted toward Melone's hormones. Many of her symptoms, including hot flashes, have subsided or disappeared, she says. "I have more energy and I sleep better," Melone says. She can even keep up with Alexa at the gym.
Radio wave treatment can help when heartburn is a problem
Q. I deal with heartburn from time to time, but so do many of my friends. At what point does heartburn merit a visit to the doctor? A. Because so many people suffer from bouts of heartburn occasionally, people dealing with frequent heartburn aren't always sure if their problem is out of the ordinary. Not all heartburn is created equal. For many people, symptoms are less frequent and easily managed, while other people suffer from regular discomfort. If you're putting up with heartburn symptoms that seem beyond your control, you need to consult a physician. When Heartburn is a Problem A less serious, but very common, form of heartburn is called "episodic heartburn." Episodic heartburn is infrequent, predictable and easily managed with over-the-counter medicine.
Tentative insurance accord reached
State lawmakers tentatively agreed Saturday on a comprehensive proposal aimed at lowering Floridians' skyrocketing property insurance rates, saying they'd finalize the plan with a vote on the package Monday. The proposal hits at high rates for wind coverage in several ways, including making more state backup coverage available to insurance companies at discount prices and calling for a direct rate rollback for the state's largest insurer, state-created Citizens Property Insurance. It was on track to be voted on Monday and sent to Gov. Charlie Crist for his signature. Lawmakers said making cheaper reinsurance from the state available for private insurance companies would lower rates for customers in the private market, although the amount of savings is still unknown.
